The Art of Detachment

I remember getting the phone call that my niece had been born without the development of her left ventricle. I recall the sinking feeling in my heart as I wanted to be there with her in Alabama but was hundreds of miles away working. I recollect how hard it was to stay abreast of the family's emergent situation while caring for my patients. Though I feel I normally practice the art of detachment well, this was one time it was really, really hard for me to detach while at work.
