Significant environmental benefits can be realized by making use of efficient steelmaking techniques. Operating at maximum power utilization through the use of a good foamy slag practice minimizes power-on times, which in turn reduces offgas generation. By making less slag, less lime is required, further reducing dust loads. Further savings can be realized by the application of a spray tower in the DEC system. This practice allows EAF steel plants to operate with zero wastewater discharge, and it reduces the sludge from the mill and caster scale pits by transferring some of the solids into the spray chamber. With the use of these practices, specific consumption of electrical energy, electrodes, carbon, lime, oxygen injection lances and tips, and refractories can be reduced in the meltshop and specific productivity improved, while at the same time advancing environmental performance.
