Shell to focus on deepwater spending and 'heartland' exploration

Shell confirmed its future commitment to Nigeria and deepwater in the years ahead but is looking to concentrate exploration on its "heartlands". The European major outlined its strategy in the coming years earlier this week and said that it intends to spend around US $25 to $30 Bn each year in capital investment until 2020 with conventional oil and gas to account for up to $6 Bn of this and deepwater up to $7 Bn. Bonga Southwest in Nigeria remains one of only two pre-FID deepwater projects Shell has in the define stage. The approval has been delayed until next year amid rumours the company is drawing up plans for a smaller project.
