It is well-known that some intraocular lenses (IOLs) develop a slightly white opacified appearance with time that occurs as a result of an increase of light scattering on their surface.1"3 Previously referred to as whitening by some researchers,4'5 this phenomenon is caused by infiltration of small aggregates of water molecules originating from the aqueous humor in nanovacuoles close to the IOL surface,and it was recently recognized as subsurface nanoglistenings.It is important to recognize the distinction between glistenings and subsurface nanoglistenings.
