Case Study: '...With 'Baited' breath' - A 35 year old Male with Worsening Pleural Effusions and Fever

Summary: A 35-year-old male presented to the emergency department with persisting symptoms of dyspnea, right-sided chest pain and fever. He was found to have progressively worsening pleural effusions not responsive to previous treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics. Investigations into underlying sources of rheumatologic, malignancies and cytologic examination for causative organisms were assessed. It was concluded that the diagnosis was strongyloides pneumonia with empyema without a history of gastrointestinal symptoms, hyperinfection or immunocompromise.
