A month has passed since I assumed the role of President of the Oklahoma State Medical Association. Time moves quickly, and it has already been memorable. One of the roles that our organization and its membership address is an ongoing advocacy for the improved health of our citizens. For physicians, this should be second nature. Compromise or a lesser victory is not something that we strive for in medicine. The most successful outcome is often a "failure is not an option" philosophy. Because of this push, medical science has moved further in the last century than in its entire history. However, the political landscape may at times be a foreign concept to a medical doctor. In that arena, the outcome is frequently tethered to the trade or concession of one item against another. Because of this, many physicians have trouble maintaining a working dialogue with those in elected office.
