Dynamic range

The Nikon D5000 offers a dynamic range of almost 12EV. Because the D5000 delivers a relatively bright midtone, care should be taken to avoid highlights from burning out. Active D-Lighting helps to balance dark shadows and bright highlights, although the effect can be very subtle in normal scenes. Of the four available ADL settings, Extra High makes the most difference.
