Introduction of low-cost plastic biogas digester to small-scale farms engaged in integrated farming systems.

Plastic biogas digesters (PBDs) were introduced into small-scale Vietnamese farms engaged in pig production to clarify and demonstrate its merits for farmers and the environment, and to identify the bottlenecks to the dissemination of this technology. A unit of PBD costs about 6-700,000 VND (about 40 to 47 USD) for construction. A PBD supplies biogas (a fuel) for cooking and mitigates bad smell and water pollution from pig excreta. Farmers could maintain the PBD and solve some technical troubles that occur occasionally, with the advice from experts. It is suggested that organizing seminars to demonstrate the PBD to farmers and offering micro-credit promote the distribution of PBDs for small-scale pig farms in the Mekong Delta. Training local technicians to set up the PBD seemed also necessary for the wider dissemination of the use of the PBDs among the farmers.
