ENVIRONMENT — Airlines are hoping to add environmental charges to ticket prices to help pay for carbon offsets but are finding out the hard way about travelers’ willingness to pay for sustainable travel. JetBlue’s Manager of Sustainability and Environmental Social Governance Sara Bogdan told Aviation Carbon 2018 last month that less than 1% of its customers ticked the box to add just $2 to help offset a portion of their flight’s carbon emissions during a trial in 2014 (JFI Nov.12’18). Bogdan said JetBlue, which offset its entire 500,000 tons of emissions during Earth Month in 2015 and has signed a 10-year, 33 million gallon sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply deal at JFK Airport, would bring the charge back next year. She said the airline would not be including the offset as an add-on, alongside items like extra leg room, during the booking process this time.
