North American jet fuel demand started 2019 on a much stronger footing. Consumption in the US, Canada and Mexico combined jumped by nearly 3% in January versus the yearearlier month, compared to 1% shrinkage in the fourth quarter of 2018. US buying was far from even with demand in the main Padd 1 market hit by severe winter storms. Widespread flight cancellations knocked US East Coast jet demand down more than 9% year-on-year but the drop was more than offset by growth in other regions, especially the US Gulf Coast. The “Amazon effect” on cargo traffic is adding to strong passenger growth in the US.
