ENVIRONMENT - Qatar Airways Nov. 3 launched a carbon off- set program for its customers using the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Carbon Offset Program. Passengers are now able to voluntarily offset carbon emissions from their flight at the point of booking. IATA is one of only four organizations worldwide to have been awarded the inde- pendent audit organization Quality Assurance Standard for car- bon offsetting. This highest standard for carbon offsetting assesses how organizations calculate emissions, select offset projects and how they communicate this information to their customers. Qatar Airway’s emissions will be offset through the IATA-approved, ClimateCare’s Fatanpur Wind Farm project in India which replaces the use of fossil fuels for power production to avoid 210,000 tons/yr of carbon emissions. “Our modern fleet of technologically advanced aircraft, together with our fuel-effi- ciency program, combine to optimize aircraft performance and reduce the environmental impact of flying,” said Qatar Airways group chief executive, Akbar al-Baker. “Our customers can now help to further minimize their environmental footprint by opting to contribute to our carbon offset program,” he added.
