Platts Launches New Sustainable Aviation Fuel Price Service

Benchmark price provider S&P Global Platts last week launched the first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) price index in Europe, overcoming the lack of regional trade in the low-carbon fuel by using a cost-based assessment. Platts is keen to capture the air-line industry’s ongoing enthusiasm for SAF despite Covid-19 demand destruction. “The green agenda is still being progressed and airlines remain committed to decarbonization,” said Platts head of oil markets pricing, Vera Blei. “While the SAF market evolves with the emergence of a spot market, our new cost-based assessment will add critical transparency allowing market partic-ipants to compare the price of traditional jet fuel with the cost of new SAF,” she added. SAF made up barely 0.05% of Europe’s total airline fuel consumption prior to Covid-19 disruptions but its use is set to accelerate. Several European airlines have already said they want to come back from Covid-19 greener, while the European Commission earlier this month launched a public and stakeholder consultation to canvas views on imposing SAF quotas on airlines to accelerate cuts in greenhouse gas emissions (JFI Aug.10’20).
