INDIA — Domestic passenger traffic growth versus year- earlier tapered off in December to just 2.6% to 13 million, a steep decline from the November gain of more than 11%, according to latest data from the Director General of Civil Aviation. Double-digit growth recorded in November for the first time in nearly a year spawned hopes that traffic growth was recovering from a prolonged slump (JFI Jan.13’20). Weak passenger growth filtered through to jet fuel fuel sales, which inched up just 1.8% in December to 191,500 b/d. That’s down from the 5% year-on-year gain in November. For the full-year 2019, passengers carried by domestic airlines rose 3.7% to 144 million, a steep plunge from the 18.6% growth recorded in 2018. In a note Citigroup said that December’s weak per- formance underscored that traffic demand has not yet fully recovered amid concerns about capacity.
