ALTERNATIVE FUELS — Shell Aviation has signed an agree- ment with US-based Red Rock Biofuels that broadens its supply base for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to the Pacific Northwest, shortly after its deal with Finnish producer Neste last month. Shell will purchase SAF and renewable diesel made from woody biomass from Red Rock’s new biorefinery in Lakeview, Oregon, which is due for completion early next year (JFI Sep.28’20). Red Rock’s plant will be the first com- mercial-scale facility that uses woody mass to produce SAF and renewable diesel. Under the Cellulosic Fuel Purchase and Sale Agreement, Shell will distribute SAF supplies to Red Rock’s existing airline customers and market renewable die- sel. The companies say the deal supports decarbonization of aviation and heavy transport by combining Red Rock’s pro- duction with Shell’s technical and commercial expertise across a global supply chain. Shell also collaborates with World Energy, SkyNRG and Amazon Air to provide sustainable solu- tions for aviation (JFI Jul.27’20). Utilizing woody biomass lying on forest floors as feedstock would mitigate the risk of wildfires that devastated California and the Pacific Northwest this summer. Red Rock Biofuels was founded in 2011 to help satisfy rapid growth in the need for low-carbon fuels and at the same time deal with the problem of catastrophic wildfires in the Western US.
