Screening in Case of Multiple Casualty Incident - How and Who?

Since 2002, attempts have been made to reach consensus on triage in case of mass attack involving large numbers of injured and ill persons. In the meantime, seven conferences and several workshops have taken place. None of the existing algorithms seemed suitable so that an attempt was made to create a new algorithm with emphasis on pre-triage by non-medical personnel. Beside the definition of triage categories, consensus was achieved regarding coding of patients red and their immediate transportation to clinical care. No generally valid recommendation could be derived from a scientific analysis of seven concepts examined with regard to their practicability so that further investigations appeared to be necessary.
