Southwest Alabama Plans State Forestry

What started out as a dream of a building to house forestry-related artifacts has mushroomed into even loftier ambitions for a state forestry museum in Grove Hill, Ala. The effort is a project of the Clarke County Historical Society's County Museum. Virginia Harrigan, wife of Scotch Lumber Co, co-owner Dwight Harrigan, said the idea for a local museum likely germinated at a family conference held in 1988. "The younger generation of the family owners had finished college and were ready to begin a career, either with Scotch or elsewhere, so we planned a weekend conference as a 'crash course on Scotch Lumber' to inform them about the family business." The young adults learned Scotch's history as well as the modern business operation. Harrigan had onlyrecently completed a history of the nearly 100-year-old operation. They were taken into the woods to see real-life forestry practices and timber harvesting.
