New index will help reduce mastitis cases

Breeding cows with improved resistance to mastitis will become an easier task for dairy producers from this month, as a new mastitis index will be published by AHDB Dairy with the April proof run.This means producers can not only select dairy sires for traits with all the existing indexes such as milk, fat and protein transmission, as well as female fertility and lifespan, but can now select sires which will specifically help reduce mastitis.
