The safe storage and use of animal medicines

John Shaw, a practising vet and partner with Wilkins and Partners, at Chard, Somerset, looks at a subject affecting all farmers. The practice deals with about 6,000 dairy cows. Today there is a bewildering array of medicinal products which, by one means or another, may end up in or on livestock for the treatment of various conditions. It is essential that these products are stored and used according to the instructions given so that they can work effectively and safely as well as comply with COSHH regulations and the Environmental Protection Act, which was introduced in December 1994. Storage problems may lead to a weakening or inactivation of the product, while giving treatments with dirty equipment may lead to introduction of infection such as abscesses, or the spread of disease such as BVD. The development of resistant bacteria could also be caused by using the wrong dose or route of administration, Poor recording of drug usage may lead to residues being found in milk or meat which brings financial penalties.
