Prospects for the export of food and agricultural products to East European markets

The experience of the 1990s shows that eastern markets are characterised by exceptionally high risk. This risk is faced both by Polish exporters and institutions participating in the servicing of contracts, that is banks and insurers (for example the Export Contracts Insurance Corporation KUKE). Hence, there is an urgent need to prepare a comprehensive programme designed to reduce the risk of Polish economic entities engaged in the export of food and agricultural products to the East European markets. Such a programme ought to guarantee smooth and safe settlements in deliveries of goods to eastern markets. It seems that the implementation of the proposed solution will require the adoption of decisions agreed at the level of governments, and that it should take into account the opinion of institutions participating in the process of commodity exchange. Integration with the European Union is the priority of Poland's economic policy. However, this does not mean that co-operation with Poland's partners in the East can be neglected, especially as trade in food and agricultural products with these partners was characterised by a surplus throughout the previous decade.
