Local, national, European, global? Cultural awareness of the inhabitants of rural areas

The cultural awareness of the surveyed inhabitants of local communities is dominated by ideas connected with global and mass culture. Their knowledge of ideas represented by Polish national and local culture is far worse. The degree of knowledge about problems connected with selected areas of culture exerts an influence on the respondents' perception of local issues, their attitude to Poland and Europe. The analysed form of awareness confirms the existence of a general tendency of the contemporary time towards the gradual disappearance of the "natural" presence of man in the concrete context of "here and now" in favour of his presence in virtual reality (tele-presence). The results of the survey put into doubt the chances of local culture to be shaped by the residents of the surveyed areas since their knowledge of local values is so limited.
