Background The role of medical coordination of multi-professional interventions in the nursing home setting remains unclear. We performed a systematic literature scoping review to study the benefits of medical coordination and multi-professional interventions. Methods Databases (CINAHL, Medline, Psyclnfo, Psyndex) were searched from 2000 to 2014. Search terms included: nursing homes AND nursing home physician OR nursing home doctor OR geriatrics OR gerontologic care OR primary health care AND cooperation OR coordination. The same procedure was done in German. Results From the 537 first hits, finally 34 were worked out as full papers (project reports, systematic literature analyses, original papers). Definitions and approaches to medical coordination in nursing homes are inhomogeneous. Especially project reports gave evidence that multi-professional interventions lead to better quality of care, more satisfaction of staff, and finally cost reduction. Conclusion Overall multi-professional interventions including medical coordination had a positive impact on residents in the nursing home setting. However, the job description of a nursing home physician is less defined.
