Three intrinsic char reaction models of unreacted shrinking core, random pore and char burnout kinetics (CBK/E) were implemented in the open source code OpenFOAM. Evaluation of the models was performed for a 2.1 MWe laboratory-scale furnace and a 500 MWe tangential-fired full-scale boiler. For the laboratory-scale furnace there was minor difference among the char reaction models except for the random pore model. For the industrial boiler the influence of the char reaction models was found insignificant in the overall temperature distribution. On the other hand results showed that the CBK/E model predicts the most accurate char burnout rate in the industrial boiler.
