Things to ponder when specifying sensor technology for pumps

The application of wireless sensors to monitor process pump hydraulic performance and defect progression in the power end of pumps is of interest to pump users. Common sense convinces perceptive users that the economics of very small and relatively inexpensive pumps generally favor replacement over repair; this then allows them to reason that it would not be cost effective to install sophisticated sensors in most small or inexpensive pumps. Quite the opposite is true for large or critically important pumps in hydrocarbon processing plants. Modern wireless sensors are rightly considered attractive for such pumps and, accordingly more and more reliability-focused users select and cost-justify these sensors for critical applications or pumping services.
