CLOSING THE DOOR ON SECURITY THREATS

The implications of terrorist or pirate attacks can be potentially devastating for all industries and communities,including the downstream oil and gas sector.By investigating the scale of these dangers,this article aims to place an empirical value on the need for ever more vigilance,physical security and intruder detection in explosive(Ex) environments.Between 1 January 2018 and 7 January 2019,1553 terrorist attacks were reported globally,with 8018 fatalities recorded.1 Of these recorded attacks,201 were performed by armed pirates on vessels and offshore installations,ranging from hydrocarbon installations,chemical and tanker vessels to container ships.This number does not account for civil insurrection,civil unrest,riots,violent protests or failed attacks-those that were either intercepted or stopped security forces.With continued unrest around the world and an ever more turbulent geopolitical environment,it is not surprising that governments,security agencies,business owners,managers and security professionals alike are focused on how best to protect critical infrastructure,physical assets and personnel from attacks.The threat types that are commonly experienced today can be extremely wide ranging;from simple criminal attacks focused on the theft of goods or assets,to the extremes of terrorist attacks on onshore and offshore hydrocarbon facilities.
