Some of this coming winter's hearth logs will be fifty-three years old. One of February's storms brought down several limbs of a fully mature flowering cherry tree upon a shady part of our garden known as Crackenthorpe, where plants of a demure hue were appropriately assembled in close proximity to the Sulking House, a folly Simon built for my fiftieth birthday rather too many years ago.
