September-floweing bulbs

September-to-October is an accepted part of the gardening year for bulb planting, and many of these are for the heralds of spring—the crocus, the narcissi or the tulip. But we sometimes forget the vast array of bulbs available for us to plant in theautumn, or later in the following spring, that will emerge in the summer months. Bulbs truly are a glorious way to increase colour and interest in the garden, and they are quite cheap compared with plants.One of the first to appear in this season, from late spring into early summer, are the onions. Allium have secured status as a fixture of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, providing trendy globes of purple, and are planted in most gardens. As well as the well-known ball-headed types such as A. 'Purple Sensation' Award of Garden Merit (AGM) and A. giganteum, there are more choice species such as the low-growing A. karataviense and the stunning A. cristophii AGM with its large flower heads that resemble fireworks exploding.
