One word, "black", could solve all the problems of plastic waste being created by the horticulture industry. If councils were to say they will not recycle black pots rather than any garden plastic, then pots bought from garden centres could go via kerb-side bins to recyclers for processing and then back to manufacturers to reuse. Most black plastic cannot be recycled easily, but most councils are not recycling any garden plastic from kerbside bins, including taupe pots introduced by the industry.Stuart Foster, chief executive of plastic recycling charity Recoup, says the 2018 word of the year was "single-use". The aim is to use it again rather than make more virgin plastic, he adds. "Even Greenpeace recognises there's a role for plastics, but everyone's got to be more responsible."
