For decades, the medical school curriculum has focused on two central sciences: "basic" and "clinical." This bipartite emphasis developed in response to the 1910 publication of the Flexner report, which called for a more rigorous and systematic approach to physician education. Now, physicians-in-training learn about the underlying mechanisms of disease during their basic science training, while the clinical science curriculum focuses on the diagnosis and management of disease. Both basic and clinical science remain essential for medical trainees. Increasingly, however, there has been a recognition that students must acquire additional scientific skills for "real-world" practice. For example, to effectively manage a complex patient suffering from co-existing medical and psychiatric morbidities, as well as challenging socioeconomic circumstances, a physician must understand the healthcare landscape and be able to navigate it effectively. To optimally care for a population of patients, physicians must possess proficiency in the science of clinical informatics and data management. And to efficiently lead healthcare teams, physicians must utilize principles from organizational management, psychology, and business.
