LNG suppliers hoping that the imminent establishment of a national pipeline company will revitalize flagging gas sales in China, the engine of global demand growth, look set for disappointment. In breaking the three state majors’ stranglehold over the gas pipeline network and LNG import terminals, the long-planned China National Pipeline Corp.had been expected to promote wider gas use by encouraging new entrants. But Chinese industry insiders tell Energy Intelligence that the new company’s top priority will be to ensure the network’s operational safety, not to boost demand.”The upcoming national pipeline company has no responsibility to ensure sufficient gas supply, but only to ensure safe operations,”one says.”We will tell state-run gas suppliers to reduce gas sales to make sure our pipelines are safe.”
