Asia Drives Green LNG Push

Carbon-neutral LNG deals, where the greenhouse gas emissions of an LNG cargo are offset by the purchase of carbon credits, are fast becoming a way for the industry to deal with increased environmental scrutiny of natural gas (WGI Apr.8'20). At least six transactions have been made public in the past year, with LNG portfolio giant Royal Dutch Shell the prime mover, selling the super-chilled fuel and offsetting the carbon from its portfolio in at least four. The latest was in June, when China National Offshore Oil Corp. (CNOOC) agreed to buy two carbon-neutral cargoes from the Anglo-Dutch supermajor. The two companies will use carbon credits from nature-based projects, such as Shell's afforestation schemes in northwest China, to offset emissions across the whole supply chain. The cargoes will ultimately be auctioned by CNOOC on the Shanghai Petroleum and Gas Exchange.
