Gas Demand Growth Bullish Despite Renewable Threat

Recent projections for global natural gas demand remain rosy despite the pervasive threat of a move toward lower carbon emissions and renewables hampering long-term growth looming large on the horizon. Global gas demand is expected to grow by 1.4% annually from 2016-40, according to a medium- and long-term gas outlook from Paris-based gas association Cedigaz, with the 2016-25 period seeing the strongest annual growth at 1.8%. The International Energy Association's (IEA) Gas 2018 report estimates gas demand growing at an average of 1.6% per year in the next five years. Both reports unsurprisingly cite China as the main engine for growth, with projections spanning from 30%-40% of global growth coming from the Asian country in the next decades.
