Petronas Beats Mideast Rivals in Adapting to Changing LNG Order

Changes in the global LNG order are forcing state-owned incumbent suppliers to rethink traditional low-risk marketing strategies based on long-term point-to-point sales. Unlike some Mideast suppliers still feeling their way, Malaysia's Petronas is already adapting. Rather than rely on trading houses, the state firm is responding to increased competition and more demanding buyers by becoming more like a Royal Dutch Shell-style portfolio player — bulking up spot trading capabilities, building up its supply portfolio and actively trying to develop new LNG markets.
