Italy-Switzerland Shipments Underscore Reverse Flow Progress

Italy made its first-ever gas shipment to Switzerland in March, realizing the Italian market's long-held dream to become a regional transport hub (WGI Feb. 4'15). Shipments normally come the other way, and the flows to Switzerland were triggered by a favorable price spread between the German NCG and Italian PSV trading hubs on colder weather in Germany and Switzerland, and abundant supply in Italy. They mark the culmination of years of investment, backed by the EU, in improving pipeline infrastructure with the goal of creating more supply links between countries and increasing relationships between pricing hubs.
