Combined-cycle gas turbines are no longer the cheapest technology for new power generation across much of the world.Cost parity for solar photovoltaic(PV)and onshore wind has come sooner than expected due to ongoing cost reductions and higher natural gas prices over the past two years,according to Energy Intelligence modeling.Gas prices have since dropped,altering the near-term picture(WGI Feb.13'19).But after tumbling 80% in the past decade,solar PV generation costs also continue to fall, and”we can clearly see the roadmap which will bring the costs further down,"says Ralf Preu,head of PV production technol- ogy at Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE).Price cuts may slow down in the next few years as the PV tells Energy Intelligence.Indeed,the International Techology Roadmap for Photovoltaics(ITRPV),an industry group,predicts generation costs will fall another 30% within 10 years.
