Hydrogen has a unique and potentially crucial role to play in the energy transition. It is the most abundant element in the universe and under high pressure has an energy density roughly three times greater than natural gas, so you get three times more energy. When combusted, water is the only emission. It's not a primary fuel, like oil or gas, but an energy carrier, more similar to electricity. But while electricity is difficult to store and transport across long distances, hydrogen's fuel-like qualities mean it can be stored like gas, and transported around the world like LNG. As well as being used as a transport fuel, it can be added to gas grids, potentially helping decarbonize heating, and could be crucial to reaching a 100% decarbonized energy system (WGI May20'20).
