The European gas industry wants "blue" hydrogen to play a bigger role meeting tough EU climate targets, saying gas with carbon capture and storage (CCS) would allow them to be reached most quickly and cheaply (WGI Jun.17'20). But the European Commission is pushing for "green" hydrogen produced using renewable electricity, arguing that blue hydrogen will only be around until green production capacity ramps up (WGI Jul.15'20). Moreover, the massive likely costs of CCS make blue hydrogen less attractive.
