The feeling of relief in Kiev these days is almost palpable. In December, there was a sense of impending doom for the gas sector before Ukrainian negotiators, buttressed by EU officials and US sanctions against Russia's Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, managed an eleventh hour transit deal with Gazprom. The five-year agreement gives Kiev significant cash flow and some breathing space to carry out industry reforms and secure alternative supplies before 2025,when Moscow will again decide whether to stop gas shipments to Europe via its neighbor's territory(WGI Jan.8'20).Political and industry officials clearly understand what needs to be done and, given how far gas reforms have come since 2014,there is reason to believe Kiev can tackle the new set of challenges.
