LNG suppliers may be about to take their first crack at Myanmar,among the Asian emerging markets forecast to drive global demand growth this decade.There are growing signs that the government is finally willing to take concrete steps to make LNG-fired power generation a reality and ensure the lights stay on ahead of elections in November(WGI Jan.22'20).The country traditionally relies on hydropower for up to 60% of its electricity,but a combination of blistering heat,higher-than-ex-pected power demand and low water levels led to frequent blackouts last summer,particularly in Yangon,the largest city,creating problems for factories without diesel generators.To avoid a repeat this hot season,which runs from March through May,the Ministry of Electricity and Energy(MOEE)launched a tender last year for five temporary barge-based emergency power projects that could be brought on line quickly.Myanmar's de facto leader,Aung Sang Suu Kyi,has pledged to boost the electrification rate to 50% by 2020 and 100% by 2030(WGI Nov.30'l6).
