IT USED TO PUT THE "fill" in landfills, but industrial wood ash is now a sought-after soil amendment for Maritime farmers - so popular, "there's a waiting list" for it, says New Brunswick dairy farmer Dwayne Perry.Perry and his wife, Becky milk about 110 Holsteins near Perry Settlement in eastern New Brunswick, and regularly apply ash on some of the 380 tillable acres they use for crops and hay. Eastern New Brunswick's reddish soils are naturally acidic, so "if you pushed the trees off and just started farming, you would have a pH 4.5," says Perry, one of the East Coast farms recently featured on a tour organized by the Canadian Forage and Grassland Assn.
