Traditionally, primary automotive wiring rated for 125°C operating temperature, known as T3 type wiring, has been insulated with PVC or cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) and exhibists the prescribed degree of flame retardancy (FR) by the incorporation of different types of FR technologies. In addition to silane cross-linking technology, such XLPE insulated cores are commonly produced in two alternative manufacturing routes - catenary vulcanization (CV) for peroxide curable insulation compounds and electron beam irradiation crosslinking. All of these solutions have proven to be very successful, but do require the cable maker to select sauna storage, CV line or irradiation technology, all of which can be a considerable investment.
