40°C below zero the work has to pause. A lower temperature does not comply with the safety rules for mobile cranes. But is this technically a mandatory? The following reports tests with ropes and wire bobbins, which were carried out at temperatures as low as -95°C as well as at room temperature. Very little is published about deep temperature behaviour of wire ropes. Grabner und Gwenetadse report about bending tests in a cold chamber. They detect a slight decrease of number of achieved bending cycles. But this is mainly caused by the behavior of the used rope lubricant. Mueller stated that dry ropes achieve only 20% of number of bending cycles compared to well lubricated ropes. In order to analyze the behavior of the wire material itself tests on ropes as well as on rope wires will be carried out. In the following results of static tensile tests on wire ropes as well as single bending tests, rotary bending tests and tensile-tensile tests on rope wires will be reported which were carried out in conditions of down to -95°C as well as at room temperature.
