Although it likely was being done earlier in the 20th century, a review of the literature indicates that some of the first research on covering turfgrasses dates to the 1960s, and covers have been used extensively on both warm-season and cool-season turfgrasses for golf andsports turf management during that time, with their primary use being for protection in extreme winters.
