A serological survey of feline immunodeficiency virus and Toxoplasma gondii in stray cats.

490 serum samples from 317 female and 173 male stray cats were analysed for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and T. gondii antibodies during a neutering programme in the Province of Verona, Italy [date not given]. 35 serum samples were positive for FIV and all of them were from cats between 1 and 8 years old out of a sample of which 22% and 3% were younger than 1 and older than 8 years of age, respectively. FIV was significantly more common in male cats (66% of positive samples). 163 serum samples were positive for T. gondii antibodies and there were no correlations amongst these samples with age or sex. There was a significantly greater prevalence of T. gondii antibodies in FIV-positive (63%) than in FIV-negative cats (31%).
