Inflammatory bowel disease mimicking alimentary lymphosarcoma in a cat

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and alimentary lymphosarcoma (LSA) are considered the most common infiltrative intestinal disorders in the cat. Vomiting, chronic small bowel diarrhoea and weight loss are the most recognized clinical signs. Definitive diagnosis typically depends upon intestinal biopsy. The challenge for pathologists is distinguishing between severe lympho-plasmacytic enteritis and early LSA (Krecic, 2001). While the prognosis for controlling IBD may be good with appropriate dietary and medical therapy, LSA is usually a fatal disease. The aim of this case report is to describe a case of a cat with chronic vomiting and weight loss diagnosed as having LSA that showed a significant and prolonged clinical improvement for several months with dietary management.
