In open pit mines the stability of slopes is determined, on the one hand, by rock mechanic precalculations and on the other hand it is essential to deter-mine the actual ground movements of slopes and the adjacent area as far as possible. The authors describe the possibilties of modern mine surveying measuring instruments in connection with methods of geodetic net compensation and analysis. Two geodetic methods (classic and automatic) are described for determining the groundmovement elements for further examination and analysis. These elements from the surface allow some interpretation of earth movements in the space of the slope and in a specific way for interpretation of a shear surface. Mine surveying and geodatic mesurements and analyses show that mine surveying and rock mechanics supplement each other and give control of the parameters used in rock mechanics.
