RIO TINTO: New Revenue Streams from QMM Monazite & RTFT Scandium

At RTFT's Sorel smelter, a contractor's employee was fatally injured on 26 April 2018, while working on one of the reduction furnaces. Operations at Sorel were suspended for 10 days and the ramp-up to normal operations was not accomplished until the end of June. Towards the end of July, a serious fire at one of the Sorel furnaces resulted in its unplanned shutdown for more than five months. This meant that RTFT now had three furnaces out of action and the company declared temporary force majeure on its slag shipments during Q3 2018. Instead of raising its overall capacity utilisation rate to 70%-compared against 55% in 2016 and 65% in 2017-RTFT achieved only 53% in full-year 2018.
