What's the matter with 299 and seedcane this spring?It's complicated!

L01-299 has become our numberone variety. So, it is natural to getI /nervous when an obvious problem affects it. This has been one of those springs when some fields look really bad, like the plants might even be dying. In some cases it is plant cane; in some cases it is stubble. Seedcane fields of nearly all varietieslook similar. The problem is variable between and sometimes within fields. Plants in affected fields show sparse, slow growth, shoots from the previous fall that have failed to re-emerge, varying amounts of lesions and dead leaf tips due to brown stripedisease, and sometimes yellowing of the leaves of some or most plants. The problem is evident in fields from top to bottom in the industry, from Rapides to St. Mary Parish. Other varieties in addition to 299 have been affected, including HoCP 04-838 andHoCP 09-804.
