摘要

This book focus is on orthodontic retention, stability and relapse, which are the most critical challenge that orthodontists face. Thirty authors reviewed orthodontic retention and stability under three sections: Orthodontic retention, Dentofacial treatment stability and relapse, and Retention protocols and materials. The book contains 13 chapters. The first three have outlined a general background about the topic starting with the history and ending with an evaluation of the quality of the available evidence. In section two, each chapter has described the available information about stability and relapse by presenting a series of reviews, systematic reviews, and concluding the overall clinical implications and advice about: incisor irregularity and dental arch form, transverse dimension orthodontic changes, Class II malocclusion, Class III treatment, anterior open bite, and orthognathic surgery. The last section, spread over four chapters, discussed retention protocols (removable, fixed), effectiveness, and retention from a biomaterial point of view. These chapters provide interesting details about different types of retainers, different ways of fabrication (conventional and modern technologies) and have explained various modifications. It is worthy of note that the authors did not assign separate chapters to discuss the relation of stability to soft tissues, or to extraction versus non-extraction treatment options. However, these issues were briefly discussed in the text. This book is reasonably-sized and well-edited, clearly printed with good quality graphs and photographs. All this make it easy to read. However, due to the high-quality glossy finish, some readers may find it difficult to focus on the letters. Treatment planning and retention requirements in Orthodontics should be individualised with the available knowledge about stability and relapse. The current book is useful reading which compiled the necessary knowledge about the topic, Furthermore, it is an evidence-based book which can be recommended to clinicians providing orthodontic treatment and postgraduate students in orthodontics.
