This year at Gormanston I was awarded the honey judge qualification and ever since I am inundated with questions as to what was involved and what it entails. In recent years the Education Officer Michael Maunsell, in conjunction with the FIBKA honey judges, revamped the Honey Judge system in an effort to find more honey judges around the country. The age profile of the ones that were there at the time was increasing on a yearly basis with very little or no new blood coming on the scene, and the number of shows that are being held around the country was also increasing, putting more demands on the time of the remaining judges. The new system should give any potential candidates exposure to more experience prior to attempting the exam.
