Silvanus recticollis Reitter 1876 (Silvanidae) new to Britain

On 17 March 2019, a number of litter heaps were investigated in the Sedge Fen area of Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve, Cambridgeshire. One of the larger heaps near the visitor centre (TL5670) contained a large amount of mildewed grass and a coleopterous assemblage more typical of grass heaps than of sedge litter. Taxa present in sieved material included Astenus pulchellus (Heer), Heterothops minutus Wollaston, Leptacinus intermedius Donisthorpe, Micropeplus staphylinoides (Marsham) (Staphylinidae), Atomaria lewisi Reitter (Cryptophagidae) and Corticaria serrata (Paykull) (Latridiidae). A single specimen of Silvanus recticollis Reitter was collected and later identified using Halstead (1975), who states that 'the general facies of head and pronotum, combined with small size, readily distinguishes this species from all others [in the genus]'.
